Pakistan today hosted an extraordinary session of the Foreign Ministers Council of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan,
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha addressed the opening session. He stressed the need for joint efforts to combat terrorism and violence in Afghanistan and to ensure that the country's territory is not used as a platform or shelter for terrorist organizations.
"We call on all Afghans to put the interests of their people first, protect their lives, refrain from violence and bring lasting peace to realize their aspirations and hopes for stability, a decent life and prosperity.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation supports the peace process in Afghanistan and is ready to join regional and international efforts to establish peace for the Afghan people and to establish the necessary contacts in this regard.
We call to promote the role of the OIC Mission in Kabul, and provide it with the financial, human and logistical resources to carry out its full responsibility for coordinating humanitarian and development assistance operations for the Afghan people," the secretary-general said.
At the meeting, the foreign ministers of OIC members made a number of proposals to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, and voiced initiatives to find a way out of the situation.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also took part in the extraordinary session.
