The landscape park of Earth's highest peak, Mount Everest (Chomolungma), has been temporarily closed to tourists since January 7 following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, according to the Culture and Tourism Administration of Tingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region, Report informs.

The northern base camp of Mount Everest is located in Tingri County.

"Due to the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Tingri County of Shigatse City at 9:05 AM on January 7, 2025, and to protect the lives and property of tourists and staff, the Everest landscape park will be closed to the public from 10:00 AM on January 7, 2025," the statement says.

Mount Everest, or Chomolungma, is part of the Himalayan mountain system and is located on the border between China and Nepal. The mountain's height above sea level is 8,848.86 meters.

Strong earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwestern China resulted in 53 deaths.
