Social media didn't do enough to prevent the spread of the recent unrest in France, European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton said in an interview with the French radio station France Info, Report informs referring to TASS.
"Social media hasn't done enough," he said in response to a reporter's request for comment on social media efforts to stem the spread of unrest in France. Breton explained that the publications inciting violence were "primarily replicated on TikTok and Snapchat" due to the work of algorithms "promoting viral content that promotes ad monetization."
The European Commissioner stressed that the law on the regulation of social networks, which enters into force at the end of the summer, will put an end to such practices.
Starting at the end of August, when “hateful content such as incitement to riots, murders or burning cars appears, social networks will be required to remove it immediately.” Violators will face "serious punishment" up to the blocking of the social network in the EU countries. "The intervention will be operational," the commissioner added.
