With the commissioning of the second runway at Sabiha Gokcen Airport, it will be able to serve up to 85 million passengers per year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the commissioning ceremony of this runway, Report informs referring to TASS.
“With the commissioning of this new runway, we will significantly increase the airport’s capacity. The new runway will be used for landings, the old one for take-offs. The capacity can increase to 85 million passengers per year. Sabiha Gokcen Airport this year is expected to serve 37 million people,” he noted.
He added that with the expansion of Sabiha Gokcen Airport, it will become the third busiest after Istanbul Airport in the European part of this metropolis and Antalya Airport. The construction of the second lane required an investment of $970 million, he noted.
“Over the past 21 years, we have increased the number of operating airports from 26 to 57, and our capacity from 55 million passengers to 337 million per year. The number of destinations to which our aircraft fly has increased to 343, or to 130 countries. We stated that there will be no place in the world where we would not fly; Türkiye has become one of the countries with the biggest network of flights,” the Turkish leader emphasized.
