Danish PM: Sanctions are only way to influence Russia on Ukraine conflict

Sanctions are the only way to influence Russia on the issue of resolving the Ukrainian conflict, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told journalists ahead of the European Political Community meeting in Albania Friday, Report informs.

"I think it is quite clear that Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire without any conditions. They are working very constructively for the benefit of peace. So far, we have not seen any concrete steps from Russia. So, of course, it is important to answer the question: what can we do to push Russia to the negotiating table and achieve peace? Of course, sanctions are one way," Frederiksen said.

The Danish PM added that she, for her part, would propose considering sanctions in the banking sector and in relation to oil.

"And, of course, the shadow fleet," she added.

Frederiksen once again emphasized that there are no specific positive signals from Russia yet.

"And even if there is a ceasefire and even if a peace agreement is signed, we need to remain vigilant because I am not sure that Russia really wants peace. So yes, we are considering additional sanctions," she stressed.
