Bulgarian socialists’ leader resigns after defeat in parliamentary elections

The leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party for Bulgaria coalition, Korneliya Ninova, has announced her resignation following the elections to the European Parliament and early elections to the People’s Assembly of the country, Report informs referring to TASS.

In the elections to the Bulgarian parliament, the socialists took fifth place, about 7% of voters voted for them, that is, about 150,000 people.

“I assess the results as catastrophic, I take political responsibility and resign,” Ninova said at a press conference.

She said that the BSP faces a full election cycle, including direct elections of the party leader, which will take place in the fall.

“The biggest concern and problem is the fact that Bulgaria is at the bottom in terms of electoral activity. Exceptionally low electoral activity is a punishment for the entire political system,” Ninova added.

According to sociological agencies, electoral activity in the June 9 vote was about 32.5%; official data will be announced by the Central Election Commission later.
