The aircraft carrying Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was forced to return to Mexico City's airport after circling in the air for more than four hours due to a technical malfunction. The incident occurred late on October 1, Report informs, citing the news portal G1.

According to the information, the plane had to circle for an extended period to burn off excess fuel before making a safe return to the airport.

One suspected cause of the issue is a bird strike on one of the plane's turbines.

There were 16 people on board, including President Lula da Silva, ministers, and the crew.

The president was in Mexico to attend the inauguration ceremony of Mexico's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, on Tuesday.

Lula da Silva will now board a reserve plane to return to Brazil.
