Azad Safarov: Oscar nomination - great opportunity to draw attention to what is happening in Ukraine

Azerbaijani-born Ukrainian director Azad Safarov, whose documentary was nominated for an Oscar, says it was a great opportunity to once again draw attention to the events taking place in Ukraine, Report informs.

In his interview with UNIAN, Safarov noted that the Oscar for him “is not the end of the road, but a springboard.”

The film “A House Made of Splinters”, which tells about children who find themselves in a difficult situation due to the war in Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea back in 2014, objectively presents the situation through the stories of children.

“The fact that the film was directed by Danish director Simon Lereng Wilmont gives an assessment of impartiality. This is what helps to believe in this film and that the Russians are to blame for this war,” Safarov said in an interview.

He also added that not only Ukrainians themselves suffer from the war in Ukraine, but also people of various nationalities: “I suffer because of the war just like all other people in Ukraine.”

He said that new similar films should not be expected in the near future: “We have opened a charitable foundation, where we provide psychological and humanitarian assistance to children, and have already helped thousands of families. We have postponed our plans in order to concentrate on assistance.”
