Argentina protests UK over special status of disputed islands

The Argentine government has sent a note of protest to the UK over granting special status to the disputed islands of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, located in the South Atlantic Ocean, the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Argentine government today expressed its opposition, through a note of protest addressed to the UK, to the attempt to designate the entire territory of the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands as a 'Special Protection Zone,' the statement said, according to Report.

According to Buenos Aires, London took a 'unilateral and illegal step, incompatible with UN General Assembly Resolution 31/49,' which calls on Argentina and the UK to refrain from making such decisions.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that Argentina considers South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, along with the Malvinas Islands, its territory, 'illegally occupied by Great Britain.'
