An anti-war protest in Melbourne, Australia descended into widespread riots and clashes with police, according to the government of the state of Victoria, Report informs via TASS.

"Victoria Police will resolutely suppress threats to police and society, including those recorded during today's rally. Of course, citizens have the right to peaceful protest, but it is unacceptable to behave in such a shameful manner towards police officers who are doing their job protecting public safety," stated Jacinta Allan, head of the regional government, on ABC television.

During the demonstration, organized by human rights groups opposing the defense conference and arms exhibition at the city's expo center, protesters engaged in confrontations with police. They threw stones at officers and set fire to garbage bins. In response, law enforcement used pepper spray, rubber bullets, and stun grenades. According to police, 33 people were arrested, and several dozen more were detained. Twenty-four law enforcement officers were injured and sought medical attention.
