This year has been marked by a 12% increase in the number of journalists arrested for their work, Reporters Without Borders said in their report on results of 2019.

Report informs, citing dw, that, in line with the document, 389 journalists and media workers are currently being held in custody, with China, Egypt and Saudi Arabia leading the list of countries where journalists face the biggest pressure.

49 journalists have been killed this year, with only a few dying in conflicts.

Syria, Mexico, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somali are considered the most dangerous countries for journalists.

57 journalists have been abducted this year, with one in Ukraine and the rest in Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

The report is based on data covering 1 January to 1 December 2019.
