The action of eco-activists on the Khankandi-Lachin road is directed against attempts to prevent Azerbaijan from conducting environmental monitoring on its internationally recognized territory, a member of the Latvian Parliament, former Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of this country Roman Naudins told Report's Eastern European Bureau.
"We have been receiving information for several days that Azerbaijani environmental activists are holding a peaceful protest rally on the Khankandi-Lachin road. The demands of the protesters are that the commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent, Major General Volkov, meet with them and guarantee the prevention of future incidents in relation to Azerbaijani civil mission. We have repeatedly read statements that Russian peacekeepers are not coping with their tasks. For this reason, the inaction of Russian peacekeepers will create new conditions on the Lachin road," Roman Naudins said.
The Latvian MP noted that Armenia must fulfill the main points of the tripartite agreement: "This is the delimitation of borders, the withdrawal of armed Armenians, the signing of a peace agreement, the opening of the Zangazur corridor."
The protest action on the Khankandi-Lachin road against the illegal exploitation of mineral deposits in the Karabakh economic region of Azerbaijan has entered its 11th day.
