Establishment of border checkpoint does not limit use of Lachin road by civilian Armenians in Karabakh

The establishment of a border crossing point by the Azerbaijani State Border Service (SBS), on the border with Armenia, at the starting point of the Lachin-Khankandi road in the sovereign territories of Azerbaijan, does not limit the use of the road by civilian Armenians living in Karabakh, Report informs.

The checkpoint, on the contrary, creates conditions for legal and regulated transportation.

The establishment of a checkpoint by Baku on the Lachin-Khankandi road is another confirmation of the sovereign right and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. Since Armenia unilaterally established a post at the entrance to the Lachin-Khankandi road, Azerbaijan should have taken adequate steps.

The commands of the Russian peacekeeping contingent and the Russian-Turkish Monitoring Center were also informed about the move.

After the establishment of the border post, the Armenians living in Karabakh should accept the proposal of the Azerbaijani authorities and start contacts on reintegration issues. The sooner this process starts, the better the lifestyle of the local Armenian population will be. The Russian Peacekeeping Contingent should not be an obstacle to this process, but serve to protect stability.

Since December 12, 2023, with the beginning of the protests, the Khankandi-Lachin road was under de facto control of the Azerbaijani side.

Contrary to the provisions of the Trilateral Declaration of November 10, 2020, Armenia and illegal Armenian military units used the road for military purposes, including the transportation of mines. The plundered natural resources of Azerbaijan were also transported on this road, and for this reason, an army with more than 10,000 personnel was created in the territories of Azerbaijan where the peacekeepers are currently stationed.

During the 133-day demonstrations on the Khankandi-Lachin road, Armenia regularly committed mine terrorism and diversions. Even when the ecoactivists started protesting, Armenian propagandists said that a humanitarian disaster was being created. If the Armenians misused the Lachin road, there could always be threats to the lives of Azerbaijani civilians. The continuation of the situation in this form was unacceptable for the people and the state of Azerbaijan.

It is the sovereign and inalienable right of a state to protect its sovereign territories from illegal interference and to ensure control at borders. The international community respects the expression of this right.

With the Prague and Sochi documents, the Armenian leadership recognized the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan. Recently, the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan also confirmed this during his speech in the parliament of Armenia.
