Svante Cornell: Armenia miscalculated world's reaction to events in Karabakh

"Armenia counted on the sympathy of the world for many reasons, particularly the Christian and cultural factor, but that was their mistake. They did not understand that the world did not recognize the annexation of Karabakh by Armenia. Nobody was going to help Armenia to continue their military actions," Report quotes Svante Cornell, a Swedish researcher and expert on the South Caucasus.

Cornell spoke during an online discussion organized by GCRF-Compass and ADA University.

He noted that Azerbaijan and Turkey were subjected to criticism from the West because they supported the implementation of four UN Security Council resolutions on Karabakh, demanding the withdrawal of the Armenian occupation forces from the territories of Azerbaijan.

"Yes, I would like these resolutions to be implemented by Armenia without a war, but, unfortunately, this did not happen. Concerning the political will of the countries of the region, Azerbaijan has proven itself as a driver and actor in the region," he concluded.
