World Bank says efficiency of irrigation systems is low in Azerbaijan

The efficiency of irrigation systems in Azerbaijan is low - only 37%, Report informs, citing the World Bank.

According to the "Transitioning to Efficient Water Sector Institutions and Programs for Addressing Water Security Challenges" report of the bank, in most regions of the country, the efficiency of irrigation systems ranges from 20-50%: "Azerbaijan's irrigation efficiency reflects a scenario where both transmission and field efficiency are approximately 60%. High leakages (losses) due to old infrastructure can lead to significant water losses.

According to the State Statistics Committee, the transmission efficiency for extensive canal systems in Azerbaijan is 73%, which is significantly higher than the acceptable indicator (60%). This difference may also indicate that losses in small farms are not recorded in official statistics, which affects overall efficiency."
