The water level in the Caspian Sea decreases by 6 cm every year, stated Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, UNEP Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director, at the session titled "Climate-Resilient Cities and Communities in the Caspian Region: Unlocking Climate Finance for Urban Adaptation" held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
According to her, the reason is not only climate change:
"The construction of cities also leads to a water crisis. The decline in water does not pass without affecting the economy, fishing, and vulnerable segments of the population. All of these slow down development as an integral part of a region's economy."
