A memorandum of understanding has been signed at COP29 between Azerbaijan's Ministry of Digital Development and Transport and the European Investment Bank (EIB) regarding cooperation on the modernization and expansion of the Baku Metro network.

According to Report, the ministry announced that the network modernization aims to increase passenger flow in the capital's underground system, which currently serves about 620-630 thousand passengers daily, and reduce traffic congestion in the city with a population of 2.4 million people.

The document was signed by Minister of Digital Development and Transport Rashad Nabiyev and EIB Vice President Teresa Czerwinska.

According to the minister, work continues on creating infrastructure for micro-mobility transport as part of the "Baku City Mobility Program" - 32 km of lanes have already been established, with plans to expand the network. Nabiyev said that the metro development project, which is part of this program, includes the construction of nine new stations and improvement of existing infrastructure.

EIB Vice President Teresa Czerwinska noted that the bank will provide support in developing an investment project that will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve urban ecology. According to her, the memorandum is an important step towards achieving sustainable mobility and improving the environmental situation in Baku.
