Expert: Uzbekistan interested in restoring Zangazur Corridor

Uzbekistan sees interest in the restoration of the Zangazur Corridor, which will contribute to the shortest access to European markets, executive director of the Uzbek center “Development Strategy” Eldor Tulyakov told Report.

The expert noted that in the issue of achieving the objectives of providing the shortest land route from Asia to Europe, Tashkent welcomes Baku’s interest in extending the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railways to the Caspian Sea.

“This will significantly strengthen the positions of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan in the international transit system and turn the Central Asian states into a key land artery connecting Azerbaijan with China and the South Asian region as a whole,” Tulyakov said.

The expert stressed that Azerbaijan can become a gateway to Europe for Uzbekistan, while Uzbekistan can become a gateway to Central Asia and Asia in general for Azerbaijan: “Currently, the possibilities of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, which provides the exit of Uzbek goods to the global market, are being actively discussed.”

According to Tulyakov, the recent visit of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Azerbaijan will affect the expansion of bilateral cultural and humanitarian ties.

“As a sign of strong friendship and solidarity, the leader of Uzbekistan, at the informal summit of the Turkic Council in 2021, noted Uzbekistan’s readiness to contribute to the restoration of Karabakh. The practical implementation of the initiative of the president of Uzbekistan was the construction of a modern school named after Mirzo Ulugbek in the city of Fuzuli, designed for 960 students,” he added.
