The State Agency for Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine has unilaterally terminated the last existing agreement with Russia in the field of fishing in the Sea of Azov, Report informs with reference to TASS.
The agreement has been in force since 1993 and “acted as an instrument for implementing the provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in terms of ensuring the rational use of aquatic biological resources in the Sea of Azov basin.”
The State Fishery Agency claims that they have repeatedly raised the issue of terminating this agreement. “However, bureaucratic obstacles and a set of international treaties of Ukraine, which, in particular, regulate the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait, did not allow this intention to be realized without negative consequences for the economy, food security of Ukraine, as well as fishermen of the Azov region, where fishing is the main type of employment of the population,” the press service said, adding that with the outbreak of hostilities, the fulfillment by the parties of their agreements under the contract became impossible.
