Mehmet Fatih Kacir: Türkiye aims to become regional battery producer

Türkiye aims to become one of the global mega-investment hubs for innovative technologies such as batteries and energy storage devices, Turkish Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir said today at the opening ceremony of the Ampherr Battery Technologies plant for the production of car batteries in Istanbul's Tuzla district, Report informs via Turkish media.

Kacir said the launch of the facility will bring Türkiye one step closer to its goal of becoming a manufacturing base for critical technologies in line with the vision of the National Technology Movement.

“We strive to increase the market share of electric and rechargeable hybrid vehicles in our country to 35% in 2030, and increase the domestic production level of these vehicles to 75%,” said the minister.

He noted that thanks to the new enterprise, the country's battery production capacity will reach 500 megawatt-hours by the end of 2024 and will gradually be increased to 2 gigawatt-hours over the course of 2025 and 2026.

“Although global battery production capacity currently stands at 2.6 terawatt-hours, this figure is projected to increase 3.5 times to 9 terawatt-hours by 2030. In this case, we want to strengthen our position in the electric vehicle and mobility sector, as well as increase our global market share, and make our country a regional battery manufacturer. To this end, we are accelerating investments and, above all, supporting the development and production of battery and energy storage technologies,” said the minister.

According to him, capital investments for these purposes have so far amounted to 78 billion Turkish liras ($2.4 billion).

Kacir said Türkiye intends to strengthen its position in the battery supply chain by producing critical raw materials and minerals for battery production.
