After the transition to mass production of electric cars in Europe, 600,000 jobs will be lost, European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton said in an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, Report informs.
He noted that now 6.6% of the population is involved in the automotive industry.
“In the European automotive sector, 12.7 million people are involved in one way or another, which is 6.6% of all employment in the EU. The transition to electric vehicles will lead to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of jobs, 600,000 in the EU,” he said.
Breton also spoke about plans to create 6.8 million electric vehicle charging points by 2030. He noted that there are now 350,000 charging points in Europe, 70% of which are in France, Germany and the Netherlands.
According to the forecasts of the European commissioner, by 2050 only 20% of cars will run on internal combustion engines. He believes that if the EU can stop selling gasoline and diesel cars to the EU from 2035, this will be the biggest industrial transformation.
The EU began the transition to renewable energy in an accelerated format after the imposition of sanctions against Russia, restricting the import of cheap Russian energy. By 2027, the EU plans to replace gas and oil with renewable and alternative energy sources. The implementation of this program is estimated at 210 billion euros.
