Baku City Circuit signs new contract with Formula 1

Baku City Circuit Operations Company has concluded a new contract with Formula 1, taking into consideration the risk of further postponement of the Azerbaijani Grand Prix.

The new date for the race will be confirmed after the coronavirus threat fades away, BCC Executive Director Arif Rahimov told Report.

“It will take 10 to 12 weeks at least to prepare for the Grand Prix,” he said.

The BCC official and other promoters act so cautiously because of the fact the Australian Grand Prix, scheduled for March 13-15, was postponed as soon as the race began. They claim that in case of such cancellation, fans should be refunded. And this is very difficult as the funds are spent on the temporary installation of tribunes.

“On the other hand, foreign spectators need to be encouraged to buy tickets in advance and book hotels,” added the BCC official.

The Azerbaijani Grand Prix was scheduled for June 5-7. However, the event has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus outbreak.
