Mine-contaminated areas pose a threat not only to the basic rights of people but also to a safe environment, clean ecological conditions, and social-infrastructural activities, Vugar Suleymanov, Chairman of the Board of the Azerbaijan Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), said during his speech the II International Workshop on "Mine action: innovations and best practices" held in Baku, Report informs.
According to him, since November 10, 2020, 337 people have been victims of explosive remnants of war, 65 people have lost their lives, and 272 people have received various degrees of physical injuries.
“Also, in line with our commitment to sustainable development, innovative solutions, and best practices, Azerbaijan recognizes the importance of the link between demining and the achievement of sustainable development goals. To this end, we are trying to define a specific National Sustainable Development Goal at the initiative of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. In addition, we offer to share the 18th Sustainable Development Goal on a global scale by setting the priority of combating mines,” Suleymanov said.
