Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan are working at the expert level to create a feasibility study for the project to lay a fiber-optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan Gurbanmammet Elyasov said at the opening of the event "Multifaceted cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan: achievements and prospects" in Baku, Report informs.
He noted that the basis of this project is the Memorandum of Understanding between the leading telecommunications companies of the two countries - AzerTelecom and Turkmentelecom on the joint construction, ownership, and operation of a fiber-optic communication line along the bottom of the Caspian Sea.
"This area is also of great importance for the creation of digital services in the South Caucasus, the Middle East, Central and South Asia," he said.
Speaking about cooperation in the non-oil and gas sector, the ambassador stressed that there are great prospects for trade and economic ties between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
"Even without taking into account the sphere of non-oil cooperation, trade turnover is growing from year to year. This can be considered an indicator of close economic cooperation. Nevertheless, given the enormous potential of our countries, it is necessary to actively develop cooperation in the sphere of small and medium-sized businesses, find new promising areas of partnership, evaluate mutual investment projects, organize business forums and international exhibitions for each other, which, I am sure, will contribute to the intensification of trade and economic cooperation and expansion of prospects for business ties," the diplomat noted.
