WHO discloses weak spot of COVID vaccines

Director of the Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals Department at the World Health Organization (WHO) Katherine O’Brien has revealed the shortcomings of vaccines against coronavirus, Report informs.

O’Brien warned that precautions must be followed after vaccination, since the world community doesn’t yet know whether vaccination can protect a person from infection and transmission. So far, only medications have been proven to protect against the disease. She noted that this is an ‘essential’ aspect of understanding the effectiveness of vaccines.

Another weak spot of vaccines is that there is no evidence on how to administer them for certain age groups, particularly for children. The WHO representative said these categories of citizens would remain at risk of infection and transmission to other people.

What is more, there aren’t enough vaccines in the world to protect everyone from the coronavirus, so it is necessary to continue to wear masks, keep social distance and wash hands. Many countries are still facing the spread of the coronavirus, and the duration of the precautions depends on what countries can do to defeat the infection, O’Brien concluded.
