WHO: About 5.5 billion COVID shots administered globally

To date, about 5.5 billion shots of coronavirus vaccines have been administered worldwide, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said this at a briefing on Wednesday, Report informs via TASS.

According to Ghebreyesus, 80% of the vaccinations were done in high- and middle-income countries.

He noted that the WHO’s primary goal is that in each country, 10% of the population will be immunized by late September, 40% of the population by the end of the year, and 70% of the population by mid-2022. And while most high-income countries have already hit the 40% target, no low-income country has even hit the 10% target.

According to him, this is not the low-income country’s fault. There is a lot of talk about vaccine equality, but, unfortunately, very little action, he said.

High-income countries have pledged to donate 1 billion doses of vaccines, but so far less than 15% have been donated.
