Scientists refute link between blood type and risk of COVID infection

American scientists have denied information that blood type affects the risk of contracting coronavirus infection, Report informs with reference to the Daily Mail.

The specialists analyzed the course of diseases among more than 100,000 patients. However, the researchers cannot provide an unambiguous explanation of the previously obtained results indicating the influence of the blood group on the risk of COVID-19 infection.

According to the scientists, this could be due to sheer chance, genetic differences, geographic characteristics of the study, and other factors distorting the results.

In March, scientists discovered a link between blood type and coronavirus. According to the results obtained, the viral RBD domain prefers antigens of the second blood group. The virus uses the RBD protein complex to bind to host cells, and the strength of its binding affects the ease of infection in humans. Nevertheless, according to scientists, their study does not allow us to understand how the disease will proceed in a patient, but it makes it possible to assess the influence of the blood group factor on this process.
