For the first time in Azerbaijan, an esophageal replacement surgery was performed on a child.
Pediatric surgeon Gunduz Agayev conducted an esophageal and gastrostomy surgery on a child born with fistula-free atresia of the esophagus (congenital absence of a bigger part of the esophagus).
According to the report, the child fed through a rubber tube inserted into the stomach for a year was brought to one of the hospitals in Baku for another surgery at the age of 1. The patient was again operated on by Doctor of Medicine Gunduz Agayev.
It is the first time that such a surgery is being performed in Azerbaijan.
The stomach is extended from the back wall, behind the heart, aorta and trachea, and connected to the end of the esophagus. After birth, the child, who had not received oral food, was fed through a tube placed in the small intestine, partly orally, for one month. After the baby learned to swallow, the probe placed in the small intestine was removed because the baby was completely fed through the mouth.
The patient is currently under medical supervision and is in good condition.
