Can COVID-19 affect future births?

Aga Rza Agayev, a geneticist at the Thalassemia Center, told Report that it is very difficult to predict how COVID-19 will affect newborns in the future and whether there will be any changes in people who contracted the virus.

According to him, humans are exposed to numerous of viruses since they are born:

"When we analyze the human genome, we will find that about 8% is made up of virus residues. These are usually called endogenous retroviruses. These viruses enter the genome and remain in one piece. Of course, they are not active, but they stay in the genome. How they will be affected depends on various factors. Depending on the location, the entrance to the genome, the form of movement, there is a possibility of causing the virus. They have been studied for a long time. As for COVID-19, it is difficult to predict how it will affect newborns in the future and whether there will be any changes in people infected with the virus. This topic will be studied for many decades."
