Azerbaijani hepatologist: COVID-19 can aggravate pathological processes in liver

COVID-19 can aggravate pathological processes in the liver, and therefore vaccine is recommended for every liver patient in remission (even patients with cirrhosis), said hepatologist Gulnara Agayeva of the Baku Health Center.

According to her, coronavirus primarily causes inflammation and disruption of microcirculation in the lungs: "However, patients may experience major changes in other organs, such as liver damage. Elevation in biochemical parameters and impaired liver function can cause fatigue, loss of appetite, and general weakness in healthy people. This change can lead to more serious complications in people with liver disease. Thus, in patients with cirrhosis, the condition may worsen by the appearance of dangerous diseases such as hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, bleeding from varicose veins of the esophagus."
