Almost 10,000 people infected with HIV in Azerbaijan since 1987

A total of 9,926 individuals have been diagnosed with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) in Azerbaijan since the first detection of the virus in the country in 1987 until the end of the second quarter of 2024, Gunash Jafarova, Deputy Director of the Republican AIDS Center under the Health Ministry of Azerbaijan, said at a local radio program, Report informs.

Jafarova highlighted that 69.5% of those infected were men, while 30.5% were women.

“As a result of anti-epidemic measures, significant steps have been taken and achievements made in combating HIV/AIDS in the country. Compared to other countries in the region, Azerbaijan has one of the lowest HIV infection rates. In particular, I would like to note that the level of awareness about HIV/AIDS in society has increased thanks to the multi-directional prevention strategy implemented in the country,” she noted.
