WUF13 highlights nature-based solutions in Cali

The authorities of Cali, Colombia, are implementing biodiversity conservation and decarbonization programs, viewing climate policy and housing development as interrelated areas of urban transformation, Cali Municipal Secretary Maria del Mar Mozo said during a panel discussion at WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.

She stated that the city recognizes the importance of preserving biodiversity, combating climate change, and ensuring sustainable development, and is therefore implementing specific plans for biodiversity conservation and decarbonization.

She also noted that the increased attention to the city from international and national partners has coincided with serious challenges in the housing sector.

According to Mozo, Cali faces both a qualitative and quantitative housing shortage-a problem common to many Latin American cities in terms of providing affordable and decent housing.

The municipal representative emphasized that housing policy cannot be considered separately from the climate agenda and sustainable development objectives.

"Therefore, we are presenting a project being developed and implemented in Cali that combines social inclusion, climate change adaptation, the creation of public spaces in partnership with communities, and resettlement processes," she stated.

According to her, the initiative is already being implemented at the city level and can be scaled up.

"It is at the territorial level that real change can be achieved. The challenges are significant, but they can be addressed step by step. This example can be scaled up to encourage donors, partners, and all stakeholders to pay attention to Cali and nature-based solutions," Mozo added.
