US State Department talks on timing of appointing new envoy to Azerbaijan

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has commented on the delay in the appointment of a new US ambassador to Azerbaijan, the US bureau of Report informs.

Miller, in response to a question addressed to the relevant topic, said that the State Department is in favor of the soonest approval of the candidacy of Mark Libby, nominated by US President Joe Biden back in May last year:

“Well, I will say we support the swift confirmation of all of our nominees, and if you have any further questions about it, you should probably direct them to Capitol Hill,” Miller noted.

The term of office of the US ambassador to Azerbaijan expired last July.

On May 25, 2022, Joe Biden submitted a proposal to the House Foreign Affairs Committee to appoint diplomat Mark Libby as ambassador to Azerbaijan.

However, on January 3 of this year, the proposal for his candidacy was returned to the Biden administration. On the same day, the State Department nominated him again.

Libby currently works at the National War College in Washington DC.
