UN honors memory of Turkish diplomat Evner Ergun, victim of Armenian terrorism

On August 21, the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, the United Nations headquarters in New York paid tribute to the victims of terrorism worldwide and UN staff members who lost their lives in terrorist attacks.

According to Report, one of the UN staff members killed in a terrorist attack is Evner Ergun, the only Turkish diplomat in whose memory a memorial plaque is placed at the organization's headquarters.

He was assassinated by an Armenian terrorist organization on November 19, 1984, in Vienna, while serving as the Deputy Director of the UN Center for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs.

Throughout history, Armenia has committed mass murders and genocides, disregarding all boundaries. Armenian terrorism has not spared even diplomats, who are among the most inviolable people in the world, protected by international and humanitarian laws.

During the Armenian-executed "Operation Nemesis," important figures of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) and the Ottoman Empire were killed.

Armenians, claiming at every opportunity that they were allegedly subjected to "genocide," resumed targeting Turkish diplomats in 1973. ASALA (Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia), JCAG (Justice Commandos against Armenian Genocide), ARA (Armenian Revolutionary Army), and other Armenian terrorist organizations were established in 1975. As a result of ASALA and JCAG's terrorist activities against Turks living abroad, 58 Turkish citizens, including 31 diplomats and their family members, were killed. However, many of terrorists have remained unpunished to this day. The terrorists from the Armenian Revolutionary Army who killed diplomat Evner Ergun are still at large.

UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq told Report's US bureau that the UN opposes any attack on diplomats from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, or any other country.

"We believe that all states should follow the Vienna Convention on the protection of diplomats. Diplomats should be given full opportunity to carry out their work without any oppression or threats. This is the main condition for the effective implementation of diplomacy in the world," he noted.

The UN representative added that an attack by terrorist organizations or individuals on a diplomat of any country is essentially an attack on the means of peaceful conflict resolution.

Betul Yuruk, an experienced journalist in foreign policy issues who worked for a long time as a representative of Anadolu Agency at the UN office in Geneva and at the headquarters in New York, and who currently serves as a CNBC representative in New York, said that honoring Ergun's memory at the UN headquarters, considered a symbol of peace, is actually a very serious message to Armenia and the terrorist organizations it supports.

"As a journalist who has been writing news about international relations and diplomacy for many years, I had the opportunity to work with many diplomats in most countries, especially with Azerbaijani and Turkish diplomats. The Karabakh issue and the issue of the so-called 'Armenian genocide' have constantly been in the focus of Turkish and Azerbaijani diplomats. In recent years, especially after the liberation of Karabakh from occupation, Azerbaijani and Turkish diplomats have once again come under great pressure. These threats and oppressions have actually been ongoing since the 1970s. To date, more than 30 Turkish diplomats have been killed by Armenian terrorists, one of whom is Evner Ergun, a high-ranking diplomat and staff member of the UN office in Geneva," she said.
