UN gears up for 79th session of General Assembly in New York

Preparations are underway at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York for the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly - High-level Week 2024, Report informs.

Security measures have been strengthened on Manhattan Island, where the 79th session of the UN General Assembly will be held, and the UN headquarters in New York has switched to an enhanced work regime in preparation for the traditional week.

The High-Level Week, which brings together world leaders, will kick off on September 22. The first two days (September 22-23) will feature the Summit for the Future meeting. Out of the 193 UN member states, 150 will be represented at the level of heads of state and prime ministers, while other countries will be represented at the level of foreign ministers in the Summit.

This Summit underscores the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to address pressing challenges such as climate change, poverty and inequality, while also tackling the impacts of ongoing conflicts and global health crises. The Summit will result in a negotiated Pact for the Future, an action-oriented document aimed at bolstering global cooperation and adapting to current challenges effectively for the benefit of all and for future generations. Against this backdrop, attention will be focused on ongoing crises such as the conflict in the Middle East and the wars in Ukraine and Sudan during official sessions and meetings.

Azerbaijan will be represented at the session by a delegation led by Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. A delegation led by Mukhtar Babayev, the COP29 President-Designate and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, will also participate in the high-level week. During the week, Azerbaijan's preparations for COP29 and the issues in this context will also be discussed at side events.

The High-level Week will conclude on September 30.
