Azerbaijan is among the countries affected by the mine threat, the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva, said at the public hearing held on November 4 at the parliament themed “Tackling the Threat of Landmines: The Impact of Explosives on the Ecosystem," Report informs.
According to her, 65 civilians lost their lives as a result of mine explosions in the last 3 years: "After the Patriotic War, hundreds of Azerbaijanis were victims of mine explosions. Yesterday, again, a civilian was injured by a mine in Tartar. All of this is heartbreaking."
The UN Coordinator stressed that the threat of landmines hinders sustainable development and the achievement of peace: "As a result of the threat of landmines, not only people lose their lives, but this danger also negatively impacts the soil and its fertility."
Appreciating ANAMA's work in this field, Andreeva talked about cooperation with UN organizations and institutions since 2020 and said that a lot of work has been done.
