Ukrainian political analyst: Agreement reached by Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders in Prague opens new page in relations between two countries

The agreement reached by leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Prague with the mediation of the European Union (EU) opens a new page in the relations between the two countries, Taras Berezovets, a Ukrainian political analyst, told Report.

"Most of the UN member-states recognize each other's territorial integrity. We can note the recognition of the issue of territorial integrity by the Armenian leadership as a positive point. Let's hope that Armenia will learn from the bitter experience of the not-so-distant past and accept the principle of inviolability of borders not only de jure but also de facto. The Armenian people should also accept this. Thus, Armenia and Azerbaijan should live in peace," the analyst said.

He stressed that the parties should open a new page: "It will be very difficult. Our friends from Western countries should help the two countries in this regard. First, we are talking about the EU and the USA, which are interested in ensuring peace in the South Caucasus."

According to him, serious efforts and a lot of time are needed to establish long-term peace: "Of course, we understand that Azerbaijan and Armenia have many enemies. Undoubtedly, Russia and Iran are strong rivals. Therefore, they will try to intervene in the situation and destabilize it. In any case, the Prague meeting yielded good results. The Ukrainian state and society welcome these agreements. The creation of peace in the South Caucasus, the stability and security of Azerbaijan, our main ally in this region, also meet the interests of Ukraine."
