A thematic conference titled "National identity, resistance and sovereignty: Perspectives for Corsica" is being held in Rome, jointly organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) and the Nazione Movement, which suffered from French colonialism and fought for the independence of Corsica.
Report informs that the conference is being attended by the leadership and members of the Nazione movement, as well as representatives of think tanks operating in Italy and experts on decolonizing law.
Abbas Abbasov, executive director of the Baku Initiative Group, said that the conference will discuss the main challenges faced by the Corsican people, who have suffered from French colonial policy, as well as political, legal, economic, social, cultural and other issues. He noted that the BIG considers the non-recognition of the Corsican language as the state language by France on the island and the suppression of local culture as a violation of human rights and opposes the assimilation policy.
Tural Ganjaliyev, a member of the Milli Majlis, said that the non-recognition of the official status of the Corsican language and the decisions of French courts to ban the Corsican language serve to deliberately weaken Corsican identity by France.
It was emphasized that Corsica's struggle for self-determination and independence is part of a unified wave of resistance against the general colonial policy, demonstrating solidarity with the liberation movements carried out in other colonial territories of France.
The conference will analyze the recognition of the official status of the national identity and the Corsican language, the protection of cultural heritage, ensuring the right of the Corsican people to self-determination, and the prospects for independence guided by the relevant mechanisms of the UN and other international organizations.
