Official of Ombudsman's office: Operation of Metsamor NPP - serious threat to region

The operation of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant is a serious threat to the region, Rashid Rumzada, deputy head of the Human Rights Commissioner (Ombudsman) Office of the Republic of Azerbaijan, told the International Baku Forum themed "Healthy environment and mine-free life to achieve sustainable development goals" is being organized by the Agency of State Support to Non-Governmental Organizations of Azerbaijan, Report informs.

He said that today more than 70 countries suffer from mine terrorism.

Rumzada emphasized that Azerbaijan is one of the countries that suffer from the landmine problem: "Armenia has committed various crimes against Azerbaijan for many years. Mine terrorism is one of them. Our natural resources have been looted for thirty years. This is a crime of ecocide. Pollution of Okchuchay for many years is also a serious threat to the region. The operation of the outdated Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant in Armenia is a serious threat to the region."

He said that although Armenia has ratified many international documents related to environmental threats, it has not implemented them.
