June Soomer: Bonaire people deprived of freedom in their own land

The people of Bonaire have been denied the right to live freely as citizens in their own country, according to June Soomer, a member of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.

According to Report, in a statement to journalists, Soomer expressed her pleasure in being in Baku to fight for the right of the Bonaire people to self-determination. She emphasized the importance of working with the Bakı Initiative Group in this direction, as the Bonaire people have been deprived of living freely as citizens in their own land.

Soomer stressed the necessity of holding large-scale events to raise global awareness about the situation on the island.

"It is crucial for the world to be informed about what is happening in Bonaire," she noted.

Soomer explained that reporting to the UN on colonialism, slavery, and all related issues is part of their mandate.

She called for new initiatives to lead colonized countries to independence and the need to evaluate those initiatives.

Soomer said that currently the forum does not directly engage with colonial countries, as they are assessing the steps European states are taking in the fight against colonialism.
