The UN has already taken many steps towards decolonization, but must continue this process, June Christine Marie Soomer, a member of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, told journalists on the sidelines of the international scientific conference "Imperial Structure: Ideologies and Realities of Colonialism," according to Report.
“At present, this process has reached a deadlock, and the United Nations must call on the colonizing states to ensure genuine decolonization of their overseas territories,” she added.
According to her, the UN decolonization committees are currently conducting a process to assess the readiness of these territories to become independent nations.
“Personally, I believe that many of these countries are already ready for independence. But due to the so-called gradualism policy and claims that they are allegedly unprepared—based on their size, economic base, and other factors—they are being prevented from completing the path to full decolonization. I believe it’s time to put an end to this,” she emphasized.
June Kristine Marie Sommer stressed that the Baku Initiative is taking serious steps toward the full decolonization of all territories.
