Azerbaijan is chairing the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in a very turbulent time, when complex political processes are ongoing in the world, LINKS EUROPE Director Dennis Sammut said at a symposium "From Bandung to Baku: The Non-Aligned Movement in a Complex and changing global context".
According to Report, Sammut said that Azerbaijan chaired the movement at the outset of the pandemic and managed to unite the NAM members and resist the pandemic through joint efforts.
He stressed the importance of Azerbaijan's leadership at the time of turbulent geopolitics and added that a similar event will be held in the Hague in October of this year.
According to Sammut, the year of forming the NAM on Bandung principles was a difficult one, as the cold war had its say.
He noted that the final act of the Helsinki agreement played a special role in Europe: it provided an impetus to establishing the notions of peace and stability.
Yugoslavia, Cyprus and Malta who then were also part of the Non-Aligned Movement played a positive role in adopting the Helsinki agreement, Sammut said.
According to him, Ukraine was an alarm bell for Europe.
It became clear that there was a lack of necessary dialogue and that led to the current situation, he said, noting that regardless of region or country, be it the humanitarian crisis in Yemen or Afghanistan, or the situation in Palestine, peace and security must always be top priority, Sammut noted.
