An international conference organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) was held at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Report informs citing BIG's post on social networks.
According to the post, the event became an important platform for discussing the legacy of French and Dutch colonialism, bringing together parliamentarians, experts, politicians, and independent figures from around the world. The main focus of the discussions was on issues of justice, responsibility, and self-determination in the context of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Conference participants sought to find ways to solve problems left as a legacy of the colonial era.
Among those present were representatives from Guadeloupe, Corsica, Martinique, New Caledonia, French Guiana, Union of Comoros, French Polynesia, Saint Martin, and Bonaire. Diplomatic delegations from Russia, Switzerland, and Kazakhstan showed interest in the event.
The conference was an important step in rethinking the colonial past and finding ways to build a more just future for former colonies. Participants expressed hope that such meetings would become regular and help in solving accumulated problems.
Meanwhile, a silent demonstration organized by the Baku Initiative Group took place near the building and inside the UN office in Geneva, with representatives of independence movements in French and Dutch colonies participating.
