Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) have conducted extensive research in the Igdir Province of Türkiye. The expedition, led by Dr. M.M. Huseynov and accompanied by Dr. S.G. Ashurov and Dr. B.M. Jalilov, marks the first time Azerbaijani archaeologists have ventured into another country for archaeological exploration.
This five-year project not only strengthens the bond between Azerbaijan and Türkiye but also sheds light on the enigmatic history of Eastern Anatolia and Azerbaijan. The initial findings have been remarkable, with the team registering settlements dating back to the Late Chalcolithic-Early Bronze Age and Middle Bronze Age, along with an urban site, a fortress, and numerous burial mounds. The most significant artifacts have been handed over to the Igdir Museum for preservation and further study.
The newly discovered sites bear a strong resemblance to those found in Azerbaijan, particularly in the Nakhchivan region. In the coming years, Azerbaijani archaeologists plan to conduct extensive excavations at one of these promising sites.
