Education has always been a priority for the UK in Azerbaijan, British Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Fergus Auld, said on X, Report informs.
Auld said that the institution played and continues to play an important role in UK-Azerbaijan relations.
The diplomat recalled that 30 years ago, the first British Council office and teaching center was opened in the heart of Baku – Ichari Shahar:
“Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev and UK Prime Minister John Major signed the bilateral treaty to establish the British Council’s operation in Azerbaijan and began a groundbreaking partnership. Over the past 30 years, the British Council has served hundreds of thousands of young and talented Azerbaijanis helping them to learn and speak English to take exams, have open doors to new careers, and provide support or even scholarships to study in the UK.
The British Council has had a special place in the hearts of Azerbaijanis across the country. In my first year as the tenth British ambassador to Azerbaijan, I’ve met so many people with fond memories and life-changing experiences at the Council, from ministers to business figures and academics to professionals. Happy anniversary, British Council Azerbaijan!”
