31 years pass since Azerbaijan joined UN

Today marks the 31st anniversary of Azerbaijan's full membership in the UN, Report informs.

Azerbaijan has been a member of the United Nations since March 2, 1992, after the UN General Assembly admitted Azerbaijan at its 46th session.

In this regard, the state flag of Azerbaijan was raised in front of the UN headquarters in New York, and on May 6, the permanent representation of Azerbaijan began to operate.

Azerbaijan's membership in the UN has played an essential role in establishing relations with the world powers and conveying the voice of the Azerbaijani people to the international community. Mutual visits and meetings also contributed to Azerbaijan's relations with the UN.

From the first day, Azerbaijan, through the UN platform, has tried to draw the attention of the world community to the military aggression policy of Armenia to resolve the conflict peacefully. The speech of President Heydar Aliyev at the 49th session of the UN General Assembly in 1994 went down in history as an important event in conveying the realities of Azerbaijan to the world at the UN level. In his speech, Heydar Aliyev especially criticized the aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan and called on the international community not to turn a blind eye.

Resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884, adopted by the UN Security Council on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in 1993, affirmed the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. They demanded the immediate cessation of hostilities and the occupying forces' unconditional withdrawal from Azerbaijani territory. But for 27 years, those demands remained on paper.

On September 27, 2020, under the leadership of victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, the brave Azerbaijani Army launched counter-offensive operations along the entire front to prevent military provocations, combat activity and ensure the security of the civilian population. The Azerbaijani Army alone implemented the unfulfilled UN Security Council resolutions and liberated Azerbaijan's occupied territories from the invaders in a short time. Thus, the Second Karabakh War, which lasted 44 days, entered the history of Azerbaijan in golden letters as the Patriotic War.

Azerbaijan is closely cooperating with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR), the Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBTO).

The cooperation with UNICEF aims to improve the situation of refugee and IDP children and adolescents in Azerbaijan. In 1995-1997 and 1998-2000, Azerbaijan was a member of the UNICEF Executive Committee.

Azerbaijan, a member of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in 2000-2002, is one of the main initiators of the organization's annual resolution on the release of women and children taken prisoner and hostage during military conflicts.

Besides, the Republic of Azerbaijan was a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2012-2013.
