Xabi Alonso speaks out on Liverpool and Bayern Munich speculation as both clubs target Bayer Leverkusen boss

Xabi Alonso “assumes” he will still be Bayer Leverkusen head coach next season but could make no guarantees over his future with both Liverpool and Bayern Munich making him their top managerial target, Report informs via Metro.

Following Jurgen Klopp’s shock decision to leave Anfield at the end of the season, Alonso leads Liverpool’s shortlist of potential replacements amid his remarkable campaign at Leverkusen.

The German side are currently eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga with 12 games left to play having swept Bayern aside in the recent meeting between the top two.

This week, Bayern announced Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the season with the Bavarian giants hoping to lure Alonso over to the Allianz Arena.

Alonso appeared before the media on Thursday afternoon ahead of Leverkusen’s game against Mainz on Friday night.

The 42-year-old told reporters he has ‘nothing new to say’ on his future, insisting his sole focus is on Leverkusen’s fight to win the title.

Alonso was coy however when asked if has been contacted by Bayern. ‘I understand the question, but once again, I have nothing new to say – so that’s only hypothetical’.

Asked if he will be Leverkusen coach next season, Alonso said, "right now I’m assuming that," before adding: "Right now I’m the coach and that’s certain.

"Regarding the future, I have nothing new to say. We’ll see. It’s normal that there are questions, but this is not the right moment to talk about that".
