Professional soccer player Andrej Lazarov was among the more than 59 people who died when a fire roared through a nightclub in North Macedonia, his club has confirmed, Report informs via foreign media.

The player's death in the fatal fire was revealed in an emotional statement posted by his soccer club FC Shkupi, on its Facebook page. The club wrote that he died a hero, trying to save other people at the club.

The death toll at the nightclub Pulse comes from The Associated Press (AP), which also reported that another 155 people were injured when the blaze broke out during a crowded concert.

The AP reported that 15 people were "detained for questioning" after the early morning March 16, 2025, fire.

According to CNN, pyrotechnics are believed to have caused the fire. The victims include Andrej Gjorgieski, a singer in the DNK band that was performing.

"With deep pain and great sorrow, we announce that our footballer, Andrej Lazarov, has been confirmed among the victims of the tragic fire that happened at night in Kocan," the team wrote on Facebook.

"FC Skopje expresses its most sincere condolences to his family, relatives and the entire large family of our club," the statement continued. "Andrej was only a part of Skopje for six months, but his name will always remain unchanged as part of our team."
