Former Germany striker Kevin Volland will leave Bundesliga club Union Berlin in the summer and return to boyhood club 1860 Munich, who play in the third division, both clubs said on Monday, Report informs via DPA.

Volland, 32, came to Union in 2023 from Monaco. He played 32 matches in the first season, with four goals and five assists. This season he only managed three short appearances as a substitute.

"I always felt good here and gained a lot of valuable experience even though it wasn't easy on the sporting side," Volland said in a Union statement.

Union fans had lately commented in a derogatory way about the fitness of the 15-times capped Volland.

Volland will return to 1860, where he arrived as a teenager and made his first team debut in 2010, before moving on to Hoffenheim two years later, followed by terms at Bayer Leverkusen and then Monaco.

"I am coming full circle with the return," Volland said in a 1860 statement.
