The World Bank has recommended that Azerbaijan reduce subsidies in its water sector to ensure a more sustainable future. At the event titled "Transition to Effective Institutions and Programs in the Water Sector to Address Water Security Issues" held in Baku, Stephanie Stollmeister, the World Bank's Country Manager for Azerbaijan, noted that the World Bank will consider financing based on the performance of water supply and sewerage services.
She noted that they also inspected treatment facilities and studied how operational contracts can contribute to improving these systems. For this reason, reducing subsidies will help protect the system, and this is an extremely important point that needs to be taken into account, Stollmeister noted.
